While it may feel like food is the enemy, other underlying conditions could be to blame. As a clinical nutritionist who specialises in mental and digestive health, I get to the root cause of those issues. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition, so I won’t just tell you to eat more vegetables and send you on your way.

I’m a wife, mother of three, clinical nutritionist and certified health coach — educated at UTS, Sydney University and the Australasian College of Natural Therapies. I don’t treat problems or symptoms, I treat people. I specialise in root cause analysis, because I believe the greatest health transformations happen when you address the underlying causes, not the signs. Not only have I seen this in many clients but I have experienced it first hand, having gone through my own health journey a few years ago.

Like many others, my journey towards a holistic and healthy lifestyle began with a dilemma. Or in my case, numerous dilemmas! I had always considered myself a pretty healthy eater. I did all the ‘right’ things, like limiting my kilojoule intake, eating in moderation and avoiding sugary snacks. I convinced myself I was eating well, but in hindsight I absolutely wasn’t. However, I managed to get away with my poor diet until a couple of years ago, when I started experiencing digestive problems, anxiety and hormonal imbalances. I was constantly tired, stressed and bloated.

My first instinct was to visit as many doctors as necessary until one prescribed the ‘right’ medication to ease my symptoms. I endured months of a vicious cycle of misdiagnoses and doctors prescribing medications that simply temporarily masked my symptoms, rather than treating the underlying issues.

Eventually, I realised that if no doctor could make me feel better with the aid of medicine, I would have to do it myself. After all, I knew my body better than anybody else!

By now, my personal research was well underway. I knew that armed with the right tools and knowledge, I could begin to heal myself. The more I learned, the more I realised I needed to become more mindful of what I was (and wasn’t) allowing into my body. I started to change my diet and let go of unhealthy habits like excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption. I replaced these habits with healthy ones, like exercise, meditation, yoga and the occasional green juice.

Soon enough, these many small steps accumulated in a deep-seated shift in my entire being. Not only did my digestive, hormonal and anxiety issues significantly improve, many simply disappeared! My energy levels increased, I was looking better, my stress levels decreased and I was sleeping better than ever before. I felt light, brighter and full of life. In a word, I was happy!

That’s when my passion for living a healthy, holistic lifestyle was born. I knew from that moment on, my mission was to help others find their own path toward this life of vitality and wellbeing. Today, many of my patients at my practice tell me they feel anxious, tired and out of whack. Not only do I know how this feels, I am now armed with the tools to solve these issues so they can start living their best lives.
