It can happen for a variety of reasons, such as: - Not drinking enough water - After drinking too much alcohol - Losing excess fluid due to fever, vomiting or diarrhoea - Travelling - As a result of intense exercise or hot weather Symptoms of dehydration can range from mild to severe. This sends signals to your brain that you need to look for water. ## **Signs and symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration:** 1. Thirst 2. Dry mouth 3. Headaches 4. Dizziness 5. In some cases, an oral rehydration solution may also be beneficial. If you’re concerned or symptoms don’t improve, seek medical advice. ## **Do I need an electrolyte drink for dehydration?** In some situations, oral rehydration (or electrolyte drinks) may be beneficial for improving water absorption in the gut and replacing lost electrolytes. You can find these in most chemists and supermarkets. There are some family members who may be more vulnerable to dehydration and need some extra attention. - It’s useful to be aware of dehydration symptoms when looking after infants and children due to their smaller size and increased likelihood of vomiting and diarrhoea. - Older adults may have swallowing difficulties with less [ability to detect thirst and conserve water](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26375144/). - Individuals who are exercising or working outdoors, especially in the heat.
