19.10.2018 Look and Feel Beautiful from the Inside Out with Healthy Life’s Natural Acne Treatments and Cover Ups
With school formals just around the corner, Healthy Life has compiled some natural remedies to help soothe spotty skin and ensure every student feels beautiful and confident on their big day.
Healthy Life Naturopath Marissa Malvaso said acne was the most common skin complaint among her customers and clients.
“Acne affects most Australians at some point in their life but it’s most prevalent among teenagers, with the skin condition mainly caused by the increased production of sebum due to hormonal changes during puberty. Stress, a poor diet and lack of exercise can also contribute to breakouts. While hormones are an inevitable part of being a teenager, there are a few ways that teens can help manage their acne from sipping a soothing tea to drawing on the antibacterial qualities of tea tree,” Marissa said.
Here are Marissa’s top ten tips to help teenagers battle breakouts from the inside out.
Your complexion will always improve with adequate water intake. The recommended daily requirement is 6-8 glasses.
Switch up your diet
The skin is the last organ in the body to receive the nutritional benefits of the food we eat, so healing from the inside out is key. In many cases poor dietary choices can overwhelm the eliminatory organs making them sluggish, which in turn pushes toxins out through the skin. Dairy products and foods that are high in sugar, fried or heavily processed, can create inflammation as they cause blood sugar and insulin levels to spike, resulting in hormonal fluctuations. A wholefood diet with an emphasis on a rainbow of different coloured fresh fruit and vegetables assists the body's own detoxification channels.
Working out does wonders for your skin by cleansing your pores through sweat. It also releases ‘feel good’ hormones and decreases stress.
Cleanse every day, but don’t overdo it
It's important to thoroughly cleanse your skin every day but be careful not to over wash as it can cause irritation by upsetting the skin’s natural PH levels. Thursday Plantation Face Wash harnesses the antibacterial power of tea tree oil to gently remove sebum excess and Weleda’s Gentle Cleansing foam is a gentle facial cleanser. The Jojoba Company’s Oily Skin Balancer can be applied in between cleansing and moisturising to help reduce oil production in people with oily, combination and breakout-prone skin. If skin isn’t inflamed, you can exfoliate gently with Acure Brightening Scrub a few times a week.
Regularly apply a clay mask
Bentonite clay binds to toxins and draws them out of the skin, doing all the dirty work for you. Mix 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay powder with 1 tablespoon of water and apply to your face for 20-30 minutes (or until the mask starts to crack) once a week. Redmond Clay also make a pre-hydrated mask.
Have an emergency ‘zit kit’
Tea tree oil is a great local antiseptic to use as a spot-on treatment or Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Acne Gel is a good go-to product. Apple cider vinegar is another natural remedy that you’re likely to already have in the pantry. While The Jojoba Company’s Blemish Control Serum combines aloe vera, nettle and burdock extract with the natural anti-bacterial activity of totoral and lavender to balance sebum secretion. For bad breakout days, Weleda Skin Food takes away redness in no time – even after a squeezing frenzy.
Check your vitamin levels from A-Z
Studies have shown that vitamin A reduces sebum production and helps prevent the onset of teenage acne, while a Zinc supplement such as Fusion Zinc Advanced can support wound healing and the regeneration of tissue.
Take a good probiotic
Research has proven that the lactobacillus and bifidobacteria cultures in probiotics are beneficial in the treatment of an array of skin conditions including acne. Ethical Nutrients Inner Health Plus (dairy free) offers a good combination of these strains.
Add burdock root to your diet
The root of the burdock plant contains plant chemicals known as polyacetylenes which have anti-fungal and antibiotic qualities. Burdock root has also been found to support the body’s ability to rapidly process toxins and flush them out of the system, while promoting a happy hormonal balance and healthy skin. You can incorporate burdock root into your weekly diet as a vegetable, tea or supplement such as Herbs of Gold Clear Skin.
Stay cool, calm and collected
From mint to lavender, nature is full of soothing and cooling remedies that can help ease redness and calm hormones. Planet Organic spearmint tea is calming and cooling on the body and can balance hormones reducing flare ups, while Love Tea make a beautiful Skin Glow tea which is detoxifying. Lavender oil can also calm and reduce redness. Keep skin moisturised and soothed with Aloe Vera gel and Jojoba oil and remember to apply sunscreen before long periods in the sun.
For when the big day rolls around, organic makeup artist Cathy Tolpigin has shared her tips on how to cover up the natural way using products that won’t exacerbate acne or inflame sensitive skin.
With a professional kit that’s toxin-free and contains makeup formulated without parabens, phthalates, sulfates, triclosan, and synthetic preservatives, Cathy is one of Australia’s leading proponents of high performance organic and natural makeup.
Since completing her professional makeup course five years ago, she has stopped using commercial makeup products containing toxic carcinogens and neurotoxins like lead, opting instead for clean beauty brands such as Luk and INIKA which are all-natural.
Whether she’s doing an all-day model shoot or makeup for a formal, Cathy uses the same natural and organic products.
Here are Cathy’s top ten tips for teens to create a smooth complexion without the chemicals.
Prime the skin
Skin prep is important. Get a good cleanser and make sure you cleanse morning and night. You can use a primer for longer lasting results, but for everyday wear, a simple moisturiser will do. At that age, there’s no need for anything fancy like anti-ageing products.
Keep it simple
If there isn’t a lot of scarring or redness, use INIKA BB cream, starting on the nose and spreading over the t-zone before blending out. After you’ve done this, take a step back and look in the mirror. If there’s anything the BB hasn’t covered, use INIKA concealer and just spot it on any areas with redness. This light base will leave skin looking healthy and radiant.
Go the distance
If you want a bit more coverage, you can use INIKA liquid foundation instead of BB cream. After applying concealer to any red areas, you can add some INIKA pressed powder foundation for a bit of extra cover and staying power.
Layer, layer, layer
Layering is my best tip for hiding acne. You can squeeze liquid concealer into foundation to create a thicker consistency, and then use some spot concealer followed by powder to create good matte coverage. If you’ve done the base properly it should cover anything up. INIKA is great at covering up redness and discolouration without contributing to further flare ups.
A setting powder on top of your moisturiser will help control oil. Anyone with oily skin should avoid liquid foundation and cream products. Instead, create a matte look with powder foundation and use follow up powders, whether it’s a translucent, highlighter or contouring powder, to set the t-section. Rather than reapplying powder throughout the day, have some blotting paper handy to remove any oil build up.
I’ve worked with a lot of models and clients and no one has reacted to INIKA. My own skin wouldn’t tolerate normal makeup so that’s why I use natural products.
Keep it clean
Only keep makeup on as long as you need to. While organic makeup is a thousand times better for your skin than traditional makeup, I still tell all my clients to wash it off as soon as they get home to let their skin breathe.
Do eyes first
If you want to create a smoky eye look, do your eyes first and remove the fallout from the eye shadow before applying BB cream or foundation.
Lash it up
To really make your lashes pop, apply three coats of mascara. INIKA’s vegan mascara is great because it’s made from plant-derived ingredients and doesn’t clump. The trick is to do each extra layer while the lashes are still a little damp. Run the INIKA brow/lash comb through your lashes if you get any clumps.
Make your own lip exfoliation using brown sugar, a couple of drops of vanilla extract and raw (or Manuka) honey, and gently scrub your lips before applying lipstick. Big, full lips are still all the rage. The best way to get this effect is to over draw ever so slightly along your natural lip line using an INIKA lip liner and then colour in the entire lip. Go over the lip liner with a Luk Beautifood lip tint for a semi-gloss look. Luk make natural, clean and beautiful lipsticks that nourish like a lip balm and come in a great range of colours. To tie all your makeup together, you can apply lipstick on the lips and then dab onto your cheek as a cream blush.
