Whether you’re looking for a spacer to improve inhaler efficiency or make medication intake more comfortable, our range is designed to help you breathe easier.

What is an asthma spacer?

An asthma spacer is a device used with a pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI), also known as a puffer, to help deliver medication more effectively into the lungs. It holds the medication in a chamber, allowing users to inhale at their own pace rather than all at once. This can be particularly beneficial for children and those who struggle with inhaler coordination.

According to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, spacers may improve medication absorption from inhalers.

How do you use an asthma spacer?

To use a spacer for asthma, follow the instructions on your spacer product. Generally, the process is as follows:

  1. Shake the inhaler well and press down to prime it.

  2. Attach the inhaler to the spacer as per the instructions on the spacer product.

  3. Place the mouthpiece between your lips, ensuring a tight seal. If you’re using a spacer with a mask, put the mask over your face, ensuring it covers the mouth and nose.

  4. Breathe normally and check that the spacer and inhaler are level and not tipping up or down.

  5. Press the inhaler to release the medication into the spacer.

  6. Breathe in slowly and deeply several times with the spacer in position.

  7. Repeat as needed by re-shaking the inhaler and going through steps 3 to 6 again.

What are the benefits of using an asthma spacer?

Using an asthma chamber spacer may offer a few advantages over using an inhaler alone, including:

  • Improved medication delivery: A spacer may help ensure more medicine reaches the lungs instead of being lost in the mouth or throat.

  • Reduced side effects: Spacers may reduce the chance of oral thrush and hoarseness caused by corticosteroid inhalers in some people.

  • Enhanced inhaler effectiveness: Asthma spacers help individuals who struggle with inhaler coordination, particularly children and older adults.

How often do you need to replace an asthma spacer?

Regular cleaning is essential for ensuring your asthma spacer remains effective and lasts as long as possible. Cleaning helps prevent medication buildup, bacteria growth and blockages.

However, even with regular care, asthma spacers may need to be replaced regularly. If you’ve had yours for more than six months, take it to your healthcare professional so they can check it’s working properly. Cracks, discolouration or residue buildup can all affect the spacer’s ability to deliver the medication properly.
