Challenge and reintroduction phase | Low FODMAP diet
reintroduction phase
Remember those foods we cut out? What have you been missing eating the most? This is the time to start re-introduce in a guided way, as you continue on your journey.

The next step
The next step is about reintroducing high FODMAP foods to figure out which ones set off your symptoms. This is also known as the "challenge" phase, as you are challenging different foods.
How to do this
Day 1:
- Choose 1 food and include 1/2 of your usual serve of that food with a meal of your choice. For example, add half a serve of onion into your dinner.
Day 2:
- Got symptoms? Wait a few days for things to settle, then try again at ¼ of your usual serving size.
- No symptoms? Try ¾ of your usual serve with a meal of your choice.
Day 3:
- Got symptoms? Record that you got symptoms, wait a few days, then repeat the above process with the next food.
- No symptoms? Include your usual full portion of the food with your meal
Day 4:
- Got symptoms? Record that you got symptoms, wait a few days, then repeat the above process with the next food.
- No symptoms? You can assume that this food is okay for you – YAY! BUT it is important to remember that it’s best to continue to restrict these foods whilst testing other key foods.
You will need to repeat this process with every food on the list.

Symptom diary
Remember your diary is an important tool for keeping track of symptoms (and hopefully lack thereof!) as you move through the challenge phase.
A few gentle reminders
The reintroduction phase can be quite challenging for some. Here’s what we recommend:

If you need additional and personalised support during your reintroduction phase, visit your health professional with your findings so far.
