Water you doing today?

Welcome to day one of the program! If someone asked you to describe yourself in a few words...what would you say? The literal answer would be 50 to 80 percent water!

If two-thirds of your body is made up of water, clearly it has an important role in our health. We can think of water as being your best friend, the postie and waste collector of your body. It is essential and looks out for us; from absorbing and delivering nutrients, maintaining circulation, helping with digestion, lubricating our organs, to handling our unwanted waste products. Your body also uses water to regulate body temperature (yes, your own in-built air conditioner!).

Water and your body

Water is your body’s superhero! Your body relies on it for:

  • Making saliva for chewing food
  • Keeping your airways moist
  • Helping to absorb nutrients
  • Flushing out waste products
  • Keeping joints lubricated for movement
  • Regulating your body’s temperature
  • Keeping organs moist and protected
  • Transporting oxygen to the rest of the body
  • Supporting cell growth

Water loss

We’ve learnt that water is used by our cells, tissues, and organs to keep the body functioning well. So, why do we have to keep drinking this stuff? Well, we lose water (and other salts) through these normal body processes and in particular:

  • sweating, especially on those hot sunny days.
  • breathing
  • urinating
  • digestion

So, the next question is - how do you stay well hydrated? Stay tuned, we’ll cover this tomorrow.
