What is curcumin?

Curcumin is a spice found in the turmeric root. It is scientifically known as Curcuma longa, which is part of the ginger family. It is characterised by its bright yellow colour and is a major bioactive ingredient of turmeric.

What are the benefits of curcumin?

Curcumin, derived from turmeric, contains antioxidant properties and may help with inflammation. It may help manage mild arthritis, joint pain and stiffness. It may also help alleviate exercise-induced inflammation and muscle soreness.

Are curcumin and turmeric the same thing?

Curcumin and turmeric are not the same, but they are closely related. Turmeric is a yellow spice commonly used in cooking, especially in Asian cuisine, and it comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant.

Curcumin, on the other hand, is a chemical compound that is one of the principal curcuminoids found in turmeric. It is responsible for most of turmeric’s bioactive properties.

Curcumin is often extracted and used in dietary supplements due to its potential health benefits. So, while turmeric contains curcumin, it also contains other compounds and has a lower concentration of curcumin compared to the concentrated extract used in supplements.

Can curcumin be taken every day?

It’s generally considered safe for most people to take curcumin daily, however, it’s best to consult your healthcare professional for advice on taking curcumin supplements. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
