Vitamin D

Vitamin D supplements to support your health

What are vitamin D supplements?

Vitamin D supplements are formulations associated with increasing vitamin D levels in the body. The body is known to use vitamin D to support calcium regulation and maintain healthy bones and muscles. Vitamin D supplements come in various forms, including tablets, capsules, liquids, sprays and chewable gummies.

Vitamin D may play a role in supporting many bodily functions, and vitamin D supplementation may be recommended for people with naturally very dark skin, those taking medications that impact absorption and those who don’t get the daily recommended amount of vitamin D from natural sources like sunlight and diet.

Are there benefits in taking vitamin D supplements?

Vitamin D is generally known to support strong bones and muscles, but it is also known to support general health and may prevent disease. Research shows that vitamin D may help reduce blood sugar levels and blood pressure, manage cholesterol and support brain function. It may also prevent and treat conditions like nutritional rickets in infants and children.

Our bodies make vitamin D when exposed to the sun, but studies show that nearly one in four Australians may experience vitamin D deficiency. Exposure to sunlight and consuming food fortified with vitamin D could be a way to manage and prevent vitamin D deficiency.

How long does it take vitamin D supplements to work?

The time it takes for vitamin D supplements to take effect can vary. It may take several months or longer for vitamin D levels to be replenished, but this may also depend on the individual.

Are there side effects from vitamin D supplements?

While generally safe, high doses of vitamin D may lead to calcium buildup in the blood, causing possible nausea, dehydration and constipation.

A vitamin D supplement may benefit you if you are concerned about your vitamin D levels. It’s important to speak with a healthcare professional before starting a new supplement regime.
