Planning a trip and wondering what wellness essentials to pack? A well-stocked travel kit keeps you ready for those travel hiccups that may arise, such as nausea, dehydration and tummy troubles. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you stay healthy and enjoy your journey.

Medications

Packing medications is essential. Here’s what to check off the list when packing:

  • Any personal prescription medications and copies of prescriptions.
  • Over-the-counter medications to have on hand, including:
    • Paracetamol: fever and general pains
    • Ibuprofen: anti-inflammatory, muscle aches and pains
    • Anti-nausea: help with flights, busses, cars and sea travel
    • Diarrhoea relief: keep on hand for that unexpected hit!
    • Hydration: easy-to-travel electrolyte tablets or powders
    • Anti-histamines: for any unexpected allergies
    • Saline nasal spray: help coat nasal passages whilst travelling
    • First aid kit: band aids, antiseptic cream, splinter remover

If you’re on several medications, it’s a good idea to speak to your pharmacist to get it made into a dose administration pack (a travel-friendly version) so it's much easier to carry and take while you’re away.

Personal Hygiene

Including personal hygiene items, like a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and hand sanitiser, helps you uphold your regular routine while reducing the risk of encountering new germs or allergens in unfamiliar environments. It’s a simple yet essential step to ensure a pleasant and stress-free travel experience:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Deodorant
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Body wash
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Moist towelettes or wet wipes

Preventative care

Essentials like sunscreen and insect repellent act as your first defence against common travel issues such as sunburn and bug bites. Comfort items like earplugs and eye masks can help you rest well, no matter where you are.

By taking these essentials, you manage minor hassles before they disrupt your journey, leaving you free to enjoy your travels to the fullest:

  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Earplugs
  • Eye mask for better sleep
  • Face masks (especially during flu season)

Baby

Packing for a baby or kids is a must to maintain their comfort and routine while traveling. Dedicated items like nappies, wipes, and formula ensure hygiene and familiarity when away from home. Baby-friendly medications and sun/insect protection serve as a crucial safety net for unexpected hiccups.

Being prepared with these essentials allows for a less stressful journey, keeping your baby happy and healthy:

  • Nappies and wipes
  • Formula or breastmilk storage bags
  • Baby-friendly medications (liquid paracetamol)
  • Baby sunscreen and insect repellent (patches)
  • Antibacterial tablets

The bottom line

By packing these essentials, you'll be well-prepared for a healthy and enjoyable trip. Remember to check with your doctor or a travel clinic for specific advice tailored to your needs and destination.
